Orange “Chicken”.
So, I’ll be honest orange chicken was never my go-to item on the menu before I was vegan. I’m more of a kung fu or general tso kinda girl, but that’s mostly because I love spicy way more than I love sweet. But I do have my days where I really crave some Panda Express orange chicken and on days like that, this is the perfect recipe! I adjusted this recipe to be a littttleee more on the savory side, but I’ll tell you the trick to make it restaurant-style sweet!
Ingredients:
Tofu:
1 package extra-firm tofu
3 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon ground flax-seed
½ cup rice flour (all purpose also works)
sesame oil
Sauce:
4 garlic cloves
1 inch ginger
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons white/rice vinegar
1 cup fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons maple syrup or agave (optional)
Recipe:
Tofu:
Getting the water out of the tofu is the trick for this recipe. Take the tofu out of the package and cut it in half horizontally. Take the water out by wrapping each half in paper towels and putting a plate on top of each block of wrapped tofu. Leave this anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Of course, the longer the better. Cut the tofu into cubes and set aside.
Mix your ground flax-seed, tofu, cornstarch, soy sauce, and rice flour in a bowl.
Heat up a large skillet and coat the bottom with sesame oil. You’re going to completely douse your tofu bits with your flour mixture and then once hot, place in the pan and continue turning until the tofu bits are browned from all sides.
Take the tofu out on a plate covered by a paper towel and keep aside. Now it’s time for your sauce!
Sauce:
Mince your garlic and grate your ginger.
Begin juicing your oranges so that you have a cup of fresh orange juice.
Place your large pan on medium heat and add your grated ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, and fresh orange juice. Bring this mixture to a simmer and in the meantime combine your cornstarch and water in a bowl.
After cooking this for about five minutes, add your cornstarch and water mixture and watch the sauce thicken.
Before adding your tofu, try your sauce - see if you need to add anything else. If you want it sweeter, add your maple syrup or agave.
Once mixed in, lower your heat and add your tofu pieces. Allow this to cook with the sauce for another five minutes and you’re all set! Serve with some steamed broccoli and either white or fried rice!
